This is an exciting day but always brings anxiety about what will come of it. You will likely feel pretty uncomfortable by this point in your pelvic area.
When you arrive you will see the scientist from the lab who will take care of your eggs, and this is a good time to ask them any last-minute questions
You will be put under a GA to go to sleep and then they will collect the eggs. They collect that by going in through the vagina and then a needle will go through your abdominal wall to collect the follicles from your ovaries.
It is a short procedure and only takes around 20-30mins, but you will take approx. 2 hours to recover to go home. The theatre team will write the number of eggs collected on your hand to look at when you wake up.
This same day the scientist will call you and tell you how many of those eggs were properly mature and able to be inseminated and how many were successfully inseminated.
Then we move into the next stage of what I call "the 5 day wait" which is from egg collection to transfer time.
Side effects of the GA- dizzy, nausea and vomiting
You should call you fertility team if you experience shortness of breath or any severe abdominal pain as this can be the first signs of OHSS. I have personally had this once from 13 cycles but it is very very painful.
I personally always took the days off from egg collection to transfer so I could rest, but if you wanted you could go back when the doctor says you can.
Avoid heat packs after egg collection and no baths for 4 days.
